Solana has reduced its blockchain slot time to 350 milliseconds, marking the first reduction of the parameter since the network launched, according to Solana Foundation vice president of technology Jacob Creech.

"We're in a new era of 350ms. Next stop, 300ms," Creech said in a Friday post on X. Average slot times stood at 360ms at the time of the announcement, down from the network's original 400ms design target, according to the Solana slot time explorer.

A Staged Path to 200ms

The reduction is the first step in a plan the Solana Foundation shared in June to cut slot times from 400ms to 200ms, arguing shorter slots improve latency and accelerate transaction confirmations across the network.

Three further 50-millisecond reductions are planned, with all four stages targeted for mainnet activation in Agave v4.2, a validator client developed by Anza — though the schedule remains tentative.

The underlying proposal, SIMD-0525, which establishes the shorter slot times, was approved and merged on May 14.

Why Slot Time Matters

Slot time is the interval at which Solana's proof-of-stake network produces new blocks. Cutting it directly reduces the time users wait for initial transaction confirmation, a metric that matters for high-frequency applications such as payments, trading, and on-chain gaming where Solana has positioned itself as a leading venue.

The change arrives as competition among high-performance chains intensifies and user expectations for near-instant settlement continue to rise. Confirmation latency has been one of Solana's most persistent engineering targets, alongside past work on quic-based transaction ingestion and stake-weighted quality of service.

With activation staged through Agave v4.2, validators and infrastructure providers will be watching the next milestones: 300ms, 250ms, and ultimately the 200ms endgame.
