OpenAI is in early-stage talks to acquire Trail of Bits, the New York-based security firm whose research and audits underpin a substantial slice of the crypto and open-source security ecosystem, The Information reported October 13, citing people familiar with the matter.
The report — picked up by Crypto Briefing, DigiTimes and other outlets — says OpenAI is trying to build a substantial cybersecurity business and views Trail of Bits, which finds and fixes vulnerabilities in open-source software, as a way to expand it. Neither OpenAI nor Trail of Bits has confirmed the talks, and early-stage discussions may not lead to a completed deal.
Why Trail of Bits matters to crypto
Within digital assets, Trail of Bits is one of the best-known names in human-reviewed security engagements. Its smart-contract audit portfolio spans major DeFi protocols — Crypto Briefing notes audits of Uniswap and Aave among them — and its research teams have produced tooling and findings that shaped industry practice, from formal-verification work to static analysis tools used well beyond its client base.
The firm's influence runs through open-source security generally: vulnerability research, compiler hardening, and tooling maintained for the public good. An acquisition by an AI lab would therefore ripple well past crypto — it would move a significant independent research capability inside a company whose models are themselves becoming part of the security workflow.
The consolidation question
For the crypto security market, the reported talks land at a moment of concentration. Independent audit firms have been folding into larger groups for years — Pashov Audit Group and others consolidated teams and brands even as demand for engagements outstripped capacity. If a major AI player absorbs one of the most research-driven independent firms, protocols lose one alternative for adversarial review, and the industry's center of gravity for vulnerability research shifts toward whatever an acquirer prioritizes.
There is also an open question about how an AI company would deploy human expertise at a time when automated scanning products are proliferating. Trail of Bits's reputation was built on people doing rigorous, published research — the kind of human-reviewed work that remains the industry's benchmark for pre-deployment assurance, whatever tooling assists it. Whether that culture survives inside a large acquirer is precisely the kind of thing early talks cannot answer.
Both companies declined or did not respond to requests for comment, according to coverage of the report. No price or structure has been disclosed.
