Ether is outperforming bitcoin by a wide margin, and a closely watched technical signal suggests the trend may have room to run.
The ETH/BTC ratio has formed a golden cross — the shorter-term moving average crossing above its longer-term counterpart — a pattern that has historically preceded extended stretches of ether strength against the market's largest cryptocurrency.
What the Signal Means
Golden crosses are watched as confirmation that momentum has shifted in favor of an asset. On the ETH/BTC pair, previous occurrences marked the early stages of major altcoin expansion phases, when capital rotating out of bitcoin searches for higher-beta returns elsewhere.
The current setup is unusual in one respect: ether is outperforming while both assets rally together. Bitcoin's more than 20% weekly gain has lifted the entire market, but ether's faster advance shows traders are increasingly willing to take on relative-risk positions rather than simply sheltering in the market's default asset.
A Brutal Stretch Reverses
The signal caps a turnaround for ether, which spent the first half of 2026 under pressure as fee compression, layer-2 fragmentation and competition from alternative smart contract platforms weighed on the investment case. Standard Chartered cut its ether target from $7,500 to $4,000 in February amid expectations of a deep drawdown.
Sentiment has since flipped. Spot ETF inflows have recovered alongside bitcoin's, and the DeFi base layer has shown renewed activity even as this weekend's Term Finance exploit demonstrated governance risks that still hang over the sector.
The Test Ahead
Technical signals are conditional, not causal. The last ETH/BTC golden crosses that failed did so when bitcoin dominance resumed rising on macro shocks — and this week's Jackson Hole symposium, where Fed Chair Kevin Warsh speaks for the first time as chair, is exactly the kind of event that can reorder the market in a session.
For now, the ratio's breakout leaves ether holders in an unfamiliar position after two years of underperformance: the trade is working, the chart agrees, and the burden of proof has shifted to bitcoin.
